psi+, bouncy ball, oxyglass
Mar. 29th, 2026 07:34 pmi ditched Psi for Psi+. its the dev version. i did this because it was claimed to come with video/audio call support, but it didnt have the plugin. i went digging for the plugin file, but it's an AppImage, so it extracts its dependencies into /tmp/, the RAM area. and for some reason i don't have write access to my RAM!! so, i gave up on that. but Psi+ is still pretty good. i couldnt really tell you anything specific it adds, but its updated way more often than Psi, which's last update was like '23. so there's something. as a sidenote, if anyone cares... my Jabber JID is on my Dreamwidth profile... i do all this configuring of clients and such (i gave Psi+ like a million Oxygen icons to use instead of its low-res defaults, and had a stern talking-to with its configuration panel for like 30 minutes) but i have like 2 contacts and neither of them have been online since i coaxed them to register in around october of last year. i do like to read some MUCs, which i treat like i treat Usenet, which is to say i read them like newspapers. im in the UNIX dot dog lounge, and some Queer Spark rooms, which are the Black Cat Speakeasy (bar@conference.queer-spark.org), which is dedicated to political talk but has banned capitalist discussion (luckily), so most of it is daydreaming about anarchy and communism, and the Tech room (tech@conference.queer-spark.org), which is a catch-all 'puters thing. did you know some kid crashed the entirety of i2P with his IoT botnet? i didnt. they did, though.
today i installed the single greatest piece of software. in existence. it is so elusive it hasn't been seen since KDE 4. the bouncy ball widget was remade for Plasma 6! i havent seen that thing since they got rid of the Horos wallpaper! that was a while ago! it has a lot of customizability too. at least, for ball standards. its still a pretty good time waster. it comes with all the original colors and sound[...] (singular), and also some new types of balls, like tennis, soccer, golf, etc. and a new basketball noise that isnt very good. i set mine to be a tennis ball and added a custom racket wav sound. you can see it here, but you cant hear it after the initial few seconds because it seemingly has selective mutism around the presence of OBS. with this and the Oxygen/Air remakes, Plasma 6 is shaping up to be the new KDE 4.... >:-)
add'ly, i accidentally made my Oxygen theme glassy and transparent, which i genuinely have zero clue why it wasnt until now or how to disable it. i can only get it to go back to its opaque ways by enabling both the Blur and Glass effects at the same time (which is because Glass is based off of Blur and so the two conflict). but i like it like that anyway, so im not complaining. it adds to my... skeuomorphic tastes.
