psi, katana, oxygen & air revamp
Mar. 28th, 2026 08:25 pmi got Psi, the Jabber messenger. its really cool. ive been using Profanity, which is a terminal-based program and so only has a text display. Psi has a lot of features i really like compared to Profanity. Profanity feels very limited compared to Psi. now that i have Psi i feel like Profanity is some program you'd have on a handheld palm-device that'd be your last resort while completely cut off from everyone in your isolated bunker in the middle of like Finland or some other snowy place. Psi, for starters, lets you see the profile pictures of other users. it has some other nice little features i never would've thought of, like being able to customize your computer/client information, or showing what music you're listening to. of course i used both of these things, because like how could i pass up a good customization?? anyway, it does everything Profanity did but in nice drop-down menus instead of having to push ALT+1 and skim through the /help menus. i really appreciate this client. it makes Jabber feel like a Proper messenger thing. Psi is a Proper Instant Messenger. thats what the P stands for. its Proper. Proper... Sender... Instant. Psi.
i went on a trip down memory lane, because in response to a Frutiger Aero Archive forum post about skeuomorphism, i suddenly remembered the netbook version of KDE 4, and so i wrote my thesis about KDE Oxygen and how abysmally dogshit all the corporate UIs are getting. read that if you like. but anyway, i remembered Katana while writing that, and i think i might install Katana on Iocus, and start using Iocus for stuff again. i cant install it on Solus Serifa like i usually would (since Solus Serifa is my designated experimental computer, for all things Trying it Out and Velzie I Hate CMake) because Katana uses KDE variable names and such, being a KDE fork, so it'd fuck up my installation of KDE Plasma 6. Trinity doesnt have this issue, because its developers took the time to move all Trinity files into /opt/, and all configs into .TDE stuff instead of .KDE stuff. hopefully the Katana devs make, like, .KAT or .KTNA or .SDE (Sword Desktop Environment). something to make it coexist with KDE. im eager to try out Katana.
oh! oh! also, i found this, which is really exciting for Doctor KDE Oxygen, M.D. over here, because, like, it's literally all ive ever wanted! my prayers answered! Oxygen and Air are being updated!!! i can make Oxygen purple!!!!! especially Air, since ive got Oxygen on my desktop now but Air seems much more in need of a cleanup. it'll be cool! hopefully they fix the icon set, too!
